WHAT IS ALBINISM?

IMG_3948.HEIC

Albinism is a genetic condition that results in a lack of melanin, the protein that gives color to skin, hair, and eyes, and protects the skin from the sun's harmful rays. Albinism also causes vision impairment.

Without proper care and knowledge, people with albinism can suffer from severe sunburns and are more susceptible to skin cancer.

Around 1 in 15,000 people in the world have albinism.

In Tanzania, there is a high concentration of people with albinism, with about 1 out of every 1,400 people living with this condition.

DANGER AND DISCRIMINATION

In Tanzania, many people believe that persons with albinism are cursed or possess magical powers.

Children with albinism are especially vulnerable.

They are hunted, mutilated, and even killed by people who want to sell or use their body parts.

It is believed that albino body parts can be used as charms, potions, or amulets to bring good health, wealth, and luck.

It is estimated that there have been over 170 attacks and at least 80 killings on people with albinism in Tanzania alone.

THE RISK IS REAL

To better understand the documented human rights violations against persons with albinism in Tanzania, we encourage you to explore reporting by Human Rights Watch.
